Unexpected dive bars in Shanghai

The flight from Taipei to Shanghai was short and sweet. I met a drum and bass DJ from England on the plane. He currently lives in Taipei and works as a promoter/English teacher. He spent four months in South America so we had much to talk about. He was going to Shanghai to DJ at a big club there so his trip was about 5 days long. After mentioning my 13 hour layover he suggested I join him in the city for some drinks until my flight. I couldn't resist that over a boring 13 hour drag in an airport so I agreed to venture out into the city. After an interview with the immigration officer to convince him that I was flying out to South Korea and not staying in China; he gave me a one day visa to venture out into the mainland.

My last experience in China wasn't all that pleasant but than again Ghuangzhou is NOTHING like Shanghai. I was in for a treat this time. Shanghai is China's biggest city in terms of population and is also considered the cultural and economic center of East Asia. Me and my new friend DJ Robbi got on the train off the airport and headed out to a bar where his friend was going to meet us. Dom was his friends' name and he lived in a nice little flat in Shanghai. The bar we came across was not open yet so we had sometime to kill before it opened at 830PM. We had a bottle of wine and beer outside the nearest 7 Eleven until it was time to head out to the bar. In front of us there was a rather nice and luxurious Crowne Plaza hotel.

Once Dada opened up I felt right at home. It's definitely the equivalent to your typical dive bar in the states equipped with some lounge rooms. Westerners made up most of the crowd and the drinks were also strong so I was rather comfortable.

Looks like I have to cut this entry short. My roomies are getting up from their slumber so I have to get ready for oursecond day here in Jeju island. I will continue this story soonish.

chao!
